A SURGEON'S LIFE
Several times a year, groups of school children flock to Turner Auditorium at Hopkins to hear him talk about his life and work as a surgeon. He initiated the practice several years ago after requests for his motivational speeches outpaced his ability to travel to schools to deliver them. When he is not at Hopkins, he is often traveling around the country and the world talking with educational, civic, professional, and religious groups about his endeavors, career, and philosophical and business interests. Among his popular themes are those of self responsibility, perseverance, and vigilance against the ever-encroaching dangers of managed care. He holds numerous honors and awards, including more than 20 honorary doctorate degrees. He is a member of the board of directors of the Kellogg Company, Costco Whole Corporation,Yale Corporation, the governing body of Yale University, and America's Promise, founded by U.S. Secretary of Defense Colin Powell. Additionally, he is president and co-founder, with his wife, of the Carson Scholars Fund, a non-profit corporation that recognizes students in grades 4-12 for superior academic achievement. A widely-read author, he has written three top-selling books about his life, philosophies, and sources of inspiration. |
