Founded in 1912 as the Harriet Lane Home for Invalid Children, the Johns Hopkins Children's Center houses the designated pediatric shock trauma unit for the State of Maryland, as well as Centers of Excellence in 20 pediatric sub-specialities, including cancer, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, trauma, blood diseases, psychiatric illnesses, allergies, and seizures and other brain and central nervous disorders. Every year, more than 9,000 children are admitted to the Johns Hopkins Children's Center for treatment and care; 64,000 children are treated in its doctors'offices; and 23,000 children are cared for in its 24-hour pediatric emergency department.
